Fish is almost 6 inches long!
This is a very nice fossil fish. This is Diplomystus dentatus from the Green River Formation of Wyoming. This fine specimen was found by Steve Hess in 2008. The large fish exhibits wonderful detail - the bone structure is well preserved, and the skull, fins, and tail are easily seen. The eye socket of the fish is clearly defined, and the long backbone is quite noticeable. The distinct fish has great, orangish-brown color that contrasts beautifully with the cream-colored matrix. The striking fossil is well showcased on the semi-rectangular plate of Green River shale. This is a large, displayable example of a fossil herring from the Fossil Lake Deposits.
